Dredging ship in Fuquene lake
Water Quality Monitoring
|
Lake Fuquene is located about 2,550 m above sea level in the Eastern Cordillera and around 100 km north of the capital city, Bogota. The environmental conditions of Lake Fuquene have seriously deteriorated due to the wastewater from livestock as well as the indiscriminate release of domestic and industrial effluent. Furthermore, Lake Fuquene suffered from an excess of aquatic plants, causing the reduction of water surface area with a result of subsequent water pollution and less water creatures. Alleviation of these environmental problems was an urgent issue to sustain the development in the lake watershed area.
A master plan focusing on the improvement of water resources and the surrounding environment of Lake Fuquene was formulated. The project components include water resources and use management, wastewater treatment, and aquatic plant control by grass carp. In addition, an educational program was proposed to promote public awareness on environmental issues for the effective implementation of the projects.
