Under the water resources master plan and the comprehensive management plan in the Muda River basin, Beris Dam with a catchment area of 116 km2 was designed for the Beris River, a tributary of the Muda River, in the State of Kedah in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia.

The objective of the project was to develop water resources by impounding river water to meet the demand for domestic and industrial water supply, flood control and conservation of the environment along the river course.

The dam type is Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD) with a height of 40m, a length of 155m and a storage capacity of 122 million m3, and it has appealing economic and environmental advantages such as the effective use of excavated materials, ease of construction and shortening of the construction period.

The construction of the dam started in 1999 and completed in 2004. It is expected that with this dam, severe droughts similar to the one in 1999 can be avoided.
