Sewerage water is disposed without treatment in the northern coastal area of Mexico

Mexico suffers from a serious water deficiency and this problem is worsen by a lack of treatment of wastewater, causing a great problem in water quality and consequently affecting the drinking water quality. The Mexican Government in order solve this problem, through the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) created the the "National Water Quality Monitoring Program" in the year 2000, that includes the water quality control of saline and fresh water on a nation wide level. Unfortunately, the monitoring of coastal water quality was not been done properly mainly because a lack of skills that are required for the conditions present in the area.
The Government of Mexico requested assistance to solve this problem, and though JICA the Government of Japan has been reinforcing the Mexican Master Plan Study on Coastal Water Quality Monitoring Planning since 1999. Two studies run by JICA determined that an implementation for reorganization and skill development were needed. CTI International Engineering was selected as the consulting firm to conduct this capacity development Project.
The Project Areas are Mexico City and Tamulipas state, where Manager's Office of Sanitation and Water Quality, and Basin Organism of Northern Gulf are located, respectively. And the objectives are to strengthen the capabilities of coastal water quality; improve the Quality Assurance and Quality Control systems, and; strengthen the training functions of National Reference Laboratory and Northern Gulf Regional Laboratory.
