Hydraulic Test Demonstration with Mini-Model

Rivers / Power Generation / Underground Structures / Geotechnical Services

Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba Prefectures, Japan, 2005

CTI has broad expertise and a full range of techniques in producing hydraulic mini-models that can be used very effectively in classrooms, exhibitions and demonstrations. The photo shows a mini-model of the diversion point of the Tone and Edo Rivers near Tokyo, Japan. The compact model, which is 2.0 meters long, 1.0 meter wide and 0.8 meter high, can run real water. The Froude number is adequately kept to ensure the precision of the model. The scales are 1:3000 for the horizontal dimension, and 1:200 for the vertical. Movable particles are utilized for bed material to create the phenomenon of sedimentation. Through testing, observers can easily understand where the main stream flows and what the scouring and sedimentation situation is. Hydraulic mini-models are often applied as useful tools for consensus development at the community level and for educational purposes.
