The Indonesian Government has embarked on promoting development policies for the reduction of regional discrepancies in labor force and economic potential, water resources development and flood control, this includes the provinces of North Sumatra and Deli Sederang.

The city of Medan the capital of the province of North Sumatra located in the northern part of the province along the coastline, has an approximate population of 2.5 million and is the third biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya. The city of Medan and all the areas sorrounding the city had two major problems, constant floods and water shortages.

The Medan Flood Control Project (MFCP) with founds from JBIC had set its main purpose to improve natural and human environmental conditions by mitigating flood damage in the flood prone areas along the Deli and Percut rivers. CTI has being in charge of the design and construction of 3.9 Km long Medan Floodway and improvement works on the Percut river, that covers 28 Km from the estuary of the river. This two projects includes the entire Medan city and Deli Sederang district. Also, a project for Solid Waste Management (SWM) to improve the environmental conditions by eliminating the waste dumping and accumulation along the river and floodways; this subproject required the involvement and participation of the communities located in the area.

The entire MFCP was a challenge, since it was a mixture of technical and social skills, and coordination with a wide variety of institutions and organizations. CTI was successful to achieve all the objectives and finally improve the flood problems and water management of Medan city.
