Distributed Flood Prediction System

Disaster Management / Sabo Works

Japan
photo1
Characteristics
  • 1) Highly accurate calculation using rainfall radar data.
  • 2) Scale models that reflects altitude, land use and soil structure.
  • 3) Physical reproduction of hydrological phenomena, such as surface flow and strata water flow.
  • 4) Annual accumulation calculations, with consideration of the water retention rate of the area.
  • 5) Capable of analysis of the hydrological data at any point.
  • 6) It is applicable in narrow as well as wide areas.

The primary objective of this system, which was developed by CTI, is to predict and prevent river overflows and floods caused by rain. One innovation in this system is that the monitoring area is divided and analyzed in a mesh like manner. Also this prediction system enables recreation of hydrological phenomena while considering flow courses, land tilt and rainfall time in each area. With the introduction of new computer systems in recent years, digitization of data (environmental changes, flow courses, land use, soil structure, geology), and accurate rainfall monitoring by radar, has made the implementation of a distributional flow system more accessible and interest in flood prediction system is growing.
