The existing bridges across the Pasig-Marikina River represent major traffic bottlenecks in Metro Manila due to their limited traffic capacity. Meanwhile, the collision of vessels or boats has seriously damaged the bridge piers and foundations. To provide a reliable river crossing facility with adequate capacity, the improvement of the traffic function of these bridges is imperative. These bridges must be repaired, rehabilitated, strengthened and/or replaced.

The soundness of 17 steel and concrete bridges along the Pasig-Marikina River was assessed and the master plan for improvement of these existing bridges was formulated.
