One of Japan's most important highways, the 347 kilometer-long Tomei Expressway, runs from Tokyo to Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture. The Tomei Bypass, located in Atsugi City in Kanagawa prefecture, required a bridge to cross over the main line of the Tomei Expressway.

Any prolonged interruption of this Expressway, one of the most traveled roads in Japan, would have had an enormous impact on the economy of the region.

CTI was responsible for the structural design and construction plan for the entire bypass structure and its construction method. To avoid the interruption of the traffic flow, once the bypass piers were built the main gird of the center span (about 70 m) was installed using the launching method. This was done in only one night.
