Restoration of a Sightseeing Spot

Community and Social Development

Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, 2007

Aoshima in Miyazaki Prefecture used to be one of Japan’s most popular sightseeing points, especially for honeymoon couples. However, the number of visitors has been gradually decreasing because of a boom in travel abroad. Aoshima is a small island facing the Pacific Ocean. Its features include unique subtropical vegetation and beautiful coastal views. It was designated as one of the Precious Natural Treasures of Japan, and has been preserved in good condition. Aoshima Shrine, which is located in the center of the island appears in many myths. The fact that the island has had religious significance since ancient times raises its historical charm and value, and ensures that it will retain its great value as natural and historical tourism resource.

To enhance this resource, the local government recently decided to redevelop the area in collaboration with the tourism sector. The aim was to extend the positive effects to other sightseeing areas around the island, and to add to the charm and amenities of the whole region. CTI conducted on-site investigations and interviews of local community members. Along with this, a plan was completed to show the scenario designed to win high praise from visitors and to revitalize the Aoshima area and a sustainable community.
