CTI Engineering Co., Ltd. developed an AI-driven predictive control energy management system.

Technology & Research

Aiming to achieve a decarbonized society, CTI Engineering developed a predictive control energy management system (hereinafter called this "System") that predicts power generation and consumption using AI. This System enables building owners and other relevant users to accurately manage the supply and demand of electricity, which leads to optimized costs and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

1. Background
In the wholesale electricity market that emerged following the Electricity System Reform in Japan in 2013, electricity transactions came to be completed based on market principles. Electricity transmission and distribution utilities that manage a certain area and aggregator businesses that organize multiple users (intermediaries that manage the balance of power supply and demand) are required to equalize and synchronize power supply and demand. Conventionally, supply and demand were predicted based on experience and past data. In a society where renewable energy, whose power generation amount fluctuates depending on sunlight and wind conditions, is seeing more use, a more accurate supply and demand prediction of power generation and consumption is needed to promote the utilization of renewable energy as well as equalization and simultaneity of power supply and demand. Building owners and other relevant users are increasingly asking for reduced costs and CO2 emissions in power use.

2. Technology features and details
This System predicts future renewable energy generation amount and the facilities' power consumption by using AI technology, with the aim to apply the predictions to power supply/demand management.
The features of the technologies used in this System are as follows:

(1) Accurate prediction of power generation and consumption amounts
AI technology enables accurate prediction of power generation and consumption amounts, which conventionally relied on practical experience and past records.

(2) Maximization of user advantages through power supply-demand management
This System performs optimized power supply-demand management, which includes the sales determination flow adapted to the fluctuating wholesale electricity market price. This enables users to "sell, accumulate, and discharge electricity at their best timing" to keep costs down.

3. Future outlook
With the aim to implement the developed System in society, we will conduct demonstration experiments. Based on the results, we will make improvements to optimize power supply and demand of the individual users, as well as in a certain distribution area or other regional unit, and that of a group of users managed by aggregators.

Through developing this System, CTI Engineering contributes to achieving a decarbonized society by enabling optimized use of electricity, including renewable energy.
