CTI Engineering Co., Ltd. developed a technology that seamlessly designs mechanical equipment (floodgate equipment) that requires consideration of interference with various facilities and structures (BIM/CIM application technology).

Technology & Research

CTI Engineering developed an operational production support system that uses BIM/CIM data (3D models) for use in floodgate equipment design.
This system enables automatic conversion of 3D models to 2D models, automatic preparation of bill of quantities based on 3D models, and automatic generation of structural analysis models from 3D models. Additionally, compared to the conventional design approach, which creates everything from 2D models, the new system not only improves production efficiency, but also ensures quality with no data inconsistency thanks to generating different data sets from a single 3D model. The new system also allows users to seamlessly check for any interference of civil engineering and mechanical equipment by means of integration with civil structure data.

1. Background
The i-Construction project advocated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) started the initiative in the construction industry to improve productivity throughout the entire range of construction production processes from research and survey, design, construction, maintenance and management to upgrading. Currently in the construction consultancy industry, efforts to provide visualization effects (verification of the entire finished image, verification of specific or complex parts, assistance in reviewing construction plans, assistance in understanding original drawings, etc.), labor saving (quantity estimation, etc.), improvement in accuracy (application to 3D models), and facilitation of information collection are underway as applications for BIM/CIM models.

2. Technology features and details
Against the backdrop described above, we have developed an operational production support system that uses BIM/CIM models for the design of floodgate equipment (steel plate girder roller gate) among mechanical and electric facilities design.
The details and features of the developed technology are as follows:

  • This system uses BIM/CIM data (3D models) to automatically convert 3D models to construction order documents (design drawings and bill of quantities) and automatically generate structural analysis models (FEM analysis) from 3D models (Fig. 1).
  • Multiple related software needs to be used to apply BIM/CIM models, which this system integrates into a series of operations, achieving improved production efficiency.
  • Data consistency is ensured as the variety of data sets are created from a single 3D model. The integration with civil structure data enables seamless checking for any interference of civil engineering and mechanical equipment in complex locations.

3. Future outlook
We plan to advance technological development that also covers the design of different gate types (e.g. radial gates) and plant equipment (e.g. dust collector screens), promoting BIM/CIM applications.
