1. Project overview
The Senshu Park Otemon Moat Promenade (in Akita City, Akita Prefecture), which our company helped to design, is a floating bridge structure for taking a stroll on the moat in the Kubota Castle ruins. Senshu Park, which boasts an abundance of nature in spite of its city-center location, attracts a lot of citizens and tourists hoping to enjoy the view of the lotus flowers blooming all over the moat in the summer. By offering visitors the opportunity to experience viewing lotus flowers at a waterfront site that captures the history and culture of Akita City, this project has contributed to the formation of a vital excursion space in the city for reconnecting with nature.

2. Key design points

Changing the space of the moat (waterside area) to amplify the expectations of visitors out for a stroll
Achieving a rhythm between occasional offset viewing spaces and continuous walking space
A route designed based on the existing plant habitat as well as spaces where visitors can stop to view the lotus flowers
Handrails set at a height of 0.8 meters based on consideration of the lotus growth height to reduce the presence of the structure itself
Strolling through town via an excursion space that connects diverse scenes
A design that blends in with the local community and serves as an urban excursion space that enables visitors to connect with the city's history, culture, and nature

The Good Design Award, which is organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, is an event held every year to recognize things with outstanding designs, and it is Japan's only comprehensive design evaluation and recommendation system. Various things that surround us, including products, buildings, software, systems, and services, can be considered. In terms of the Good Design Award, anything that is created by people to attain their ideals or objectives, regardless of whether those things are tangible, is considered a design, and the purpose is to evaluate and recognize the quality of such designs.
