Flood Disaster Mitigation in Camiguin Island, Philippines
July 2008 to July 2011
To prevent a disaster similar to the one experienced in November 2001 by Typhoon Nanang that caused devastating damages of around 5 million US Dollars, and to improve the living standard of the Island, the government of the Philippines established the Project for Flood Disaster Mitigation in Camiguin Island through Japan’s Grant Aid.
CTI Engineering International Co., Ltd. (CTII) provided engineering services for the detailed design and construction supervision of two (2) Sabo Dams together with access/maintenance roads located along Pontod River and one (1) Bridge over Hubangon River, located in the municipality of Mahinog where 224 people died or were missing by the Typhoon Nanang.
The Sabo Dams were constructed as a debris flow control system to protect Pontod Area from the similar disaster in the future. The upstream dam is 10 meters high and 115 meters long while the downstream dam is 12 meters high and 70 meters long. As for the Hubangon Bridge, the previously existing bridge was heavily damaged by the Typhoon Nanang, causing much trouble and making it very dangerous to the users. Immediately after the 41-meter bridge was reconstructed, the road was in use again, improving road safety and users comfort.
