 After rehabilitation of road |
The Republic of Burundi is located in Central Africa, slightly south of the Equator and borders with Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The country faces the formidable tasks of reviving its shattered economy and infrastructure. Even the capital Bujumbura is not equipped with proper and sufficient infrastructures; on contrary, the rapid increase in demand for traffic in the last several years is causing severe traffic congestion in the Capital and is becoming one of the major impediments to sustainable socio-economic development.
The basic design study was carried out in year 2009 as plans to rehabilitate (widening from two-lane to four-lane) 3 kilometers in length of the existing Arterial Roads and newly construct 1.4 kilometers long four-lane road. As such, the project aims to alleviate the traffic congestion in within the capital by vitalizing the north-south corridors that link Bujumbura with Rwanda and Tanzania as well as to elongate the circumferential road and connect it with the arterial roads running radially from the center of the city. After conclusion of basic design, though conducting the detail design, the construction works has been started in March 2011 and it has completed in March 2013.
